FRC Team 66

The Grizzlies - Team 66, formerly The Flyers of Willow Run Schools, have overcome numerous obstacles while working hard to transform culture and build leaders in STEM. Over 19 years, our team has changed the face of education in our community and provided hundreds of students with a safe environment, away from the violence, drugs and crime that is common in our neighborhoods. As one of the veteran FRC teams in the state of Michigan and a cornerstone in our community, we take our commitment to culture change seriously.

In 2010, the Ypsilanti GM Power-train Plant closed. As a result, we lost our build site, engineering mentors, and major donors. In the face of adversity, the team worked tirelessly to remain a positive force in our members’ lives with limited resources.

In 2013, because of decreasing enrollment, increasing debt and low academic success, our community voted to merge Willow Run Schools with Ypsilanti Schools. Inspired by the tenets of FIRST, our lead mentor co-chaired our high school redesign effort and built a school around FIRST’s principles. Our high school, the Ypsilanti STEM2 Middle College (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Manufacturing), is a direct extension of our team, which shows at-risk students that STEM is not only fun and rewarding, but is a proven path where everyone can go pro.
Since 1998, our team has won numerous awards including, but not limited to, a World Championship in 2002, six Chairman’s Awards and seven regionals/districts championships.

FRC Team 470

Grizzly Robotics - Team 470, formerly Alpha Omega Robotics, was founded in 2000 by FRC Team 66 and Visteon Engineers. After four great years at Visteon Corporation, Team 470 moved its shop to the now former Ypsilanti High School, which served as our home for eight years. In 2012, after a vote of the community merged our district with a neighboring district, we became Team 470 of Ypsilanti New Tech High School. Through all of the challenges that we have faced, our focus has always been on the principles of FIRST. This focus has allowed us to be successful in our school district and community.

As one of our core principles, Team 470’s mission is to spread the message of FIRST. One of our favorite events is being a part of the Detroit Maker Faire since its inception four years ago, a global event where world-renowned innovators and inventors came together to display products and ideas. We considered our participation in this event to be an excellent opportunity to display the power of FIRST programs, and we made great connections in the process. By being a part of events like this we are able to showcase future innovators and engineers that got hands-on experience only because of their opportunity to be a part of FIRST.
